Second Engineer

Definition
The Second Engineer (often called "First Assistant Engineer" in some countries) is the executive officer of the engine department. They are responsible for the practical, day-to-day management of the engine room workforce.
Key Duties
- Main Engine: Typically responsible for the maintenance of the massive main propulsion engine.
- Work Allocation: Assigning tasks to junior engineers and oilers.
- Watchkeeping: Often keeps the 0400-0800 and 1600-2000 watch, or works day work in UMS (Unmanned Machinery Space) ships.
- Safety: Ensuring safe working practices in the machinery spaces.
