Definition
The Master, commonly referred to as the Captain, is the person in command of a merchant ship. They are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel, including navigation, cargo operations, crew discipline, and compliance with local and international laws.
Responsibilities
- Ultimate Authority: Has overriding authority on all matters of safety and pollution prevention.
- Legal Representative: Acts as the representative of the shipowner in ports.
- Crew Welfare: Ensures the well-being and discipline of all personnel on board.
- Emergency Command: Takes charge during crisis situations (fire, collision, piracy).
Qualification
To become a Master, one must hold a Master Mariner Unlimited Certificate of Competency (COC), requiring years of sea time as a deck officer and passing rigorous examinations.
