Definition

A Marine Boiler is an enclosed pressure vessel operating on the principle of heat exchange. It heats water to generate steam, which is then used for various shipboard applications.

Types

  1. Auxiliary Boiler: Uses an oil-fired burner to generate steam in port or when the main engine is not running.
  2. Composite Boiler: A combination of an oil-fired boiler and an exhaust gas economizer.
  3. Exhaust Gas Economizer (EGE): Uses waste heat from the main engine's exhaust gases to generate steam while at sea (energy efficiency).

Applications

  • Heating heavy fuel oil (to reduce viscosity for injection).
  • Cargo heating (for tankers carrying viscous crude oil).
  • Accommodation heating and hot water.
