Machine Learning

"A subset of artificial intelligence that provides systems the ability to learn and improve from experience without being explicitly programmed; in maritime, it is used for route optimization and predictive maintenance."

Definition

Machine Learning (ML) involves algorithms that parse data, learn from it, and then apply what they've learned to make informed decisions. In the shipping industry, ML models process vast amounts of sensor data to find patterns humans might miss.

Applications

  1. Fuel Optimization: Learning from historical voyages to predict the most fuel-efficient route for current weather conditions.
  2. Predictive Maintenance: Analyzing vibration patterns to predict component failure weeks in advance.
  3. ETA Prediction: Improving arrival time accuracy by analyzing port congestion and vessel traffic data.
