International Safety Management Code (ISM Code)
"An international standard for the safe management and operation of ships and for pollution prevention."
Definition
The International Safety Management (ISM) Code is Chapter IX of the SOLAS Convention. It requires shipping companies to establish a Safety Management System (SMS) to ensure the safety of the ship, crew, and environment.
Objectives
- Provide for safe practices in ship operation and a safe working environment.
- Establish safeguards against all identified risks.
- Continuously improve safety management skills of personnel ashore and aboard ships.
Key Requirements
- Document of Compliance (DOC): Issued to the shipping company.
- Safety Management Certificate (SMC): Issued to the individual ship.
- Designated Person Ashore (DPA): A key link between the ship and shore management, with direct access to the highest level of management.
