Technology Dictionary Entry
Digitalization
"The use of digital technologies to change a business model and provide new revenue and value-producing opportunities; in shipping, it represents the move from paper-based to digital-based processes."
Definition
In the maritime context, Digitalization is the process of leveraging digital technologies to improve business processes, culture, and customer experiences. It is distinct from digitization (converting paper to PDF). Digitalization implies using that digital data to automate workflows and gain insights.
Examples in Shipping
- Electronic Logbooks: replacing paper deck and engine logs.
- Digital Noon Reports: Automated data collection instead of manual spreadsheet entry.
- Smart Containers: Real-time tracking of cargo conditions.
- Digital Twin: Creating a virtual replica of a physical ship to simulate performance.
Drivers
The push for digitalization is driven by the need for transparency, efficiency, and compliance with increasingly complex environmental regulations (like CII and EEXI) that require precise data reporting.
