Ship Maintenance Dictionary Entry

Condition Based Maintenance (CBM)

"A maintenance strategy that monitors the actual condition of an asset to decide what maintenance needs to be done. It dictates that maintenance should only be performed when certain indicators show signs of decreasing performance or upcoming failure."

Definition

Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) is a philosophy where maintenance is driven by the asset's health status rather than a fixed time schedule.

Comparison

  • Preventive Maintenance: "Change the oil every 500 hours." (May waste good oil).
  • Condition Based Maintenance: "Analyze the oil; change it only when viscosity drops or contaminants rise." (Optimized usage).

Tools

CBM relies heavily on diagnostic technologies:

  • Vibration analysis
  • Thermography (infrared cameras)
  • Lube oil analysis
  • Ultrasound auditing
