Chief Officer

"The second-in-command of a merchant vessel, primarily responsible for the supervision of the deck crew, cargo operations, and the safety and security of the ship."

Definition

The Chief Officer (or Chief Mate) is the head of the Deck Department and the second-in-command. If the Master is incapacitated, the Chief Officer assumes command.

Key Duties

  1. Cargo Officer: Responsible for the planning, loading, stowage, and discharge of cargo.
  2. Ship Stability: managing ballast water and trim to ensure the vessel remains stable.
  3. Work Manager: Supervising the Bosun and deck crew in daily maintenance (painting, chipping, mooring).
  4. Security Officer (SSO): Often holds the role of Ship Security Officer under the ISPS Code.
