Chief Engineer
"The senior engineer officer responsible for the satisfactory operation and maintenance of all mechanical and electrical equipment on the ship."

Definition
The Chief Engineer is the head of the technical department on a ship. While the Master has overall command, the Chief Engineer is responsible for the mechanical propulsion and the operation of all machinery on board.
Responsibilities
- Machinery Reliability: Ensuring main engines, generators, and auxiliary systems are fully operational.
- Preventive Maintenance: Overseeing the Planned Maintenance System (PMS).
- Bunkering: Managing fuel quantity, quality, and consumption.
- Environmental Compliance: Managing oil water separators, sewage plants, and emissions to ensure MARPOL compliance.
Relationship with Master
The Chief Engineer reports to the Master regarding the vessel's operational readiness but works closely as a peer in the ship's senior management team.
