Cadet

"A trainee officer on board a ship, undergoing a structured training program to become a qualified Deck or Engine Officer."

Definition

A Cadet (or Apprentice) is the lowest rank in the officer corps hierarchy. They are on board to learn, not to replace a crew member.

Types

  1. Deck Cadet: Trains in navigation, cargo handling, and seamanship to become a Third Officer.
  2. Engine Cadet: Trains in mechanics, electrical systems, and maintenance to become a Fourth Engineer.

Training

Cadets must complete a specific amount of sea time (usually 12 months) and a Training Record Book (TRB) as required by STCW before they are eligible to take their Certificate of Competency exams.
