Training Dictionary Entry
Basic Safety Training (BST)
"A mandatory STCW training course for all seafarers, covering personal survival, fire prevention, first aid, and social responsibilities."
Overview
Basic Safety Training (BST) is the foundational safety course required for anyone working on board a commercial vessel, regardless of their position (from Captain to Steward). It ensures that every crew member has the basic skills to react correctly in an emergency.
Components (The 4 Pillars)
- Personal Survival Techniques (PST): How to use lifejackets, immersion suits, and life rafts.
- Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF): Theory of fire, use of extinguishers, and basic firefighting.
- Elementary First Aid (EFA): Immediate response to accidents and medical emergencies.
- Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR): Safe working practices, emergency procedures, and human relationships on board.
Validity
While the certificate itself may not have an expiry date in some jurisdictions, STCW requires refresher training every 5 years for PST and FPFF modules to ensure skills remain current.
